Sixteen representatives from both Christian Brother and Presentation Brother schools in the south-east of Ireland gathered at Mount Sion in Waterford recently for a workshop on advocacy and the work of Edmund Rice International (ERI). The workshop was organised by Brother Kevin Mascarenhas and led by Brother Brian Bond, the Executive Director of ERI.
Participants were urged to think beyond the traditional charity and service responses to deprivation and marginalisation and were challenged to include the engagement of students in advocacy. The work of ERI at the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva was also explained and participants were encouraged to network with each other and to support the work of ERI. A presentation was made on the plight of separated children who have sought asylum in Ireland, an issue which forms part of the ministry of the Mount Sion community in Waterford.
An adapted version of the workshop was also presented to a group of twenty Presentation Brothers in Cork prior to the Waterford gathering.
