Through the Support of PresLink Presentation Brothers provides Drinking Water
The Presentation Brothers, through the support and generosity of PresLink, a group of students and teachers at Presentation Brothers College, Cork, makes it possible for the community of Bunde to access clean drinking water.
Water is a multi-dimensional issue and a prerequisite for achieving human security, from the individual to the international level.
The United Nations General Assembly recognition of human right to safe drinking water and sanitation is an important step towards ensuring water security at the individual and community levels.
Therefore, the capacity of a Community to safeguard sustainable access to adequate quantities of acceptable quality and safe water for sustaining livelihoods, human well-being and socio-economic development, protection against water-borne pollution and water-related disasters, and for preserving ecosystems in a climate of peace and political stability is the best way to ensuring the achievement of Sustainable Development Goal (SDG 6) six.
Sustainable Development Goal 6 aims to ensure universal and equitable access to safe water sources and sanitation for all by 2030. Water scarcity affects more than 40% of the world’s population.
Globally around 1.8 billion people use contaminated drinking water sources. Over 2.4 billion people lack access to basic sanitation facilities. Waterborne diseases remain one of the leading causes of child mortality, with more than 800 children dying every day from diarrheal diseases linked to poor sanitation and hygiene conditions. (UNICEF, 2016)
Thus, upholding the right to better health, provision of safe drinking water and sanitation to our Brothers and Sisters on the margins of society remains one of our critical areas of focus. Promoting sustainable clean water and sanitation facilities, equitable access to health and disease prevention and treatment are the emerging issues of concern of our time.
It was in the light of the above that Presentation Brothers in the Gboko Diocese drilled a borehole to provide safe drinking water for the community of Bunde where the Postulancy Formation House is located.
On 17th October 2018 the Most Rev. William Amove Avenya, the Bishop of the Gboko Diocese blessed and commissioned the new water point for the community of Bunde in the Gboko Local Government Area, Benue state, Nigeria. Bishop William who drank the first water pumped out, thanked the Presentation Brothers for their good works and presence among his people in the Bunde community and urged the community to maintain the water facility.
The water project was constructed with funding from PresLink at the cost of 725,000.00 naira.
We thank and appreciate PresLink of Presentation Brothers College, in Cork Ireland, for its unflinching financial support and donations to the West Africa Province of the Presentation Brothers for Mission development works over the years. These funds have gone a long way in providing necessities for many people on the margins and who are marginalised.
