Two Final Professions of Brothers

Date: 13 Dec 2017

In Bolgatangaat on the weekend of 2nd December 2017, the Brothers launched the celebrations of their Golden Jubilee in Ghana. It started with a Holy mass celebrated by Most Rev. Alfred Agyenta, Bishop of the Navrongo-Bolgatanga and concelebrated by the Bishop of Yendi Diocese, Most Rev. Vincent Sowah Boi-Nai, SVD and many other priests including Msgr. Roger Abotiyuurein of the Mary Immaculate Conception church, Kongo in the upper East Region. Bishop Agyenta lauded the Brothers for their generosity in the area of education and youth ministries and urged them to be more passionate for Christ and humanity in their apostolate of Forming Christ in the Young. He encouraged the Brothers to live in communion with God in prayer and with others, to give hope, to show concrete love and concern for their brothers and sisters in society and to remain focused and always rely on God no matter the challenges they might encounter. “Do not let past mistakes, pains and disappointments imprison your apostolate” he added.

Brothers James Debuo Der and Cletus Gubilfrom of the Wa and the Navrongo-Bolgatanga dioceses respectively professed final vows of poverty, chastity and obedience while Br. Edwin O’Sullivan renewed his vows as he celebrates fifty (50) years of Profession of religious vows and forty (40) years in Ghana. Bishop Aygenta commended Br. Edwin for being faithful to his Religious Vows for the past 50 years in the face of the many challenges.

It was well attended by Presentation Brothers from Ghana and Nigeria, including Rev. Br. Francis Agoah, Congregation Leader of the Presentation Brothers who received the vows, and many Religious women and men from other Congregations, friends and the Presentation family members.

Rev. Br. Godfrey, a senior member of the congregation who launched the Golden Jubilee, said the Brothers arrived in Ghana in 1968 and began their teaching apostolate in the St. John Bosco’s College of Education and later to the Notre Dame Minor Seminary Secondary school.

The yearlong celebration, under the theme“The Lord has done Great Things for me and Holy is His Name”, is intended to promote vocations to the Presentation way of Life, creating of Presentation Youth Groups and strengthening the Associate membership of the Congregation.

Br. Godfrey then explained that the launching marked the beginning of the celebrations through the year. Its climax will be in 2018 with a Holy mass in the minor Basilica in Navrongo where the seed was first sown. Other activities will include sports activities among staff and students of the Presentation schools, reaching out to the sick especially the young and the most neglected and quiz competitions on the life and work of Blessed Edmund Rice the Founder.

He stated that, today the West Africa Province of the Presentation Brothers is made up of Ghana and Nigeria with 32 Brothers, 22 finally professed and 10 in temporary vows. Brothers are living in ten communities in seven Dioceses comprising the Navrongo-Bolgatanga, Wa, Yendi, Sunyani and the Tamale archdiocese. In Nigeria the Brothers are working in the Gboko Diocese and in Tafawabalewa, Bauchi Diocese.

He said the 50th anniversary is an occasion for the Brothers to re-dedicate themselves and resolve to take a leap forward in promoting vocations to the Presentation way of life, to go with Our Lady of the Presentation to new lands and to make Christ known and loved among our Brothers and sisters.

As a teaching congregation, it has established schools for the education and formation of the poor and neglected youth in the peripheries such as the Presentation KG/Primary and Junior High in Logre, Presentation Junior High in Bolga, Presentation Junior High in Hain and Presentation Brothers’ secondary school (PBSS), in TafawaBalewa in Nigeria.
