Presentation Brothers Welcome New Members
Date: 07 Dec 2017
Venue: Killarney, Co Kerry
The Presentation Brothers, through their International Novitiate and house of formation in Killarney Co. Kerry, welcomed into its membership two young men saying ‘yes’ to God’s call to Religious Brotherhood. Pope Francis has inspired and encouraged a Church that is missionary by its nature; and he by his example has travelled to countries, sometimes very challenging ones, in the spirit of the mission of Jesus Christ. Many men and women from Ireland, both religious and lay, have responded to this generosity of spirit and thus travelled and reached out to every corner of the world, committing their lives to the service of others.
Two young men have travelled to Ireland in true missionary spirt to become members of the Presentation Brothers. Brother Simon Fernandes, originally from Pakistan was received as a Novice a few weeks ago, beginning two years of formation and training to becoming a Presentation Brother. At a special Mass and ceremony at the Novitiate in Killarney Brother Simon was received as a first-year novice in the Brothers, beginning his Canonical year of his two-year formation programme. The Novitiate community in Killarney focuses on forming Disciples of Christ in the spirit of Blessed Edmund Rice, founder of the Presentation Brothers, by creating a welcoming and prayerful environment, where the dignity and gifts of all are cherished.
On Saturday 25th November 2017, Brother Raj Selvarathinam, originally from Sri Lanka, made his First Profession of Religious Vows before a well-attended gathering of Brothers, family, Parishioners and the local community. Brother Raj committed his life to the service of others by professing the vows of Poverty, Chasity and Obedience. These Religious Vows frees the Religious Brother to be available for service to all God’s people. The vows “calls the Brother to live simply, to love inclusively and to listen for God’s call in the community of the brotherhood and the signs of the times.” After further training, Br. Raj is hoping, with other Brothers, to begin a new mission on behalf of the Presentation Brothers in Sri Lanka.
“It was a lovely celebration and opportunity for people in the community and parish to witness the gift of Br. Raj committing himself to God and the religious way of life in the Presentation Brothers,” said Brother Barry Noel, Director of Novices at the Novitiate in Killarney.
The new Brothers have embraced their new culture and Church in Ireland, which adds to the changing face and image of the Church in Ireland. Brother Martin Kenneally, former Congregation Leader of the Presentation Brothers, said in his homily: “We, as Presentation Brothers, in accepting Br. Raj into our professed brotherhood are called to enter into a new culture, learn from it, to be pilgrims, to be missionaries with the compassionate Christ as our Congregation changes and moves towards a very different future in this evolving world."
