TO HUMANISE EDUCATION

“In the face of an invasive individualism, which can only make us poorer in terms of our humanity and sterile in terms of our culture, it is necessary to humanise education. The school and the university make complete sense only in their contribution to the formation of the truly human person. All educators are called to help advance this process of human growth and development by means of their professional knowledge and skills indeed, but also by means of the richness of that humanity of which they themselves are, as it were, the “carriers” and the exemplars. They must, by such means, help the young, in their turn, to build a world ever more caring and ever more peaceful. Beyond that, institutes of Catholic education have the particular and specific mission to open young minds to the transcendent and to urge and guide them towards it. In Gravissimum educationis, its Declaration on Christian Education, the Second Vatican Council re-iterated that education is at the service of a holistic understanding of humanity and that the Church, Mother and Teacher, ever ensures that each new generation ‘is directed towards the formation of the human person in view of his final ends and the good of that society to which he belongs and in the duties of which he will, as an adult, have a share’ (Address of His Holiness, Pope Francis, to Participants in the Plenary Assembly of the Congregation for Catholic Education, Rome, Thursday, 9th February, 2017 [Private and free translation]”.
