Great Football at Blitz Tournament
Date: 07 Jun 2017
Last Friday, the annual Colm Cooper Presentation Monastery Football Tournament took place in Killarney. With six schools participating, a great days football was had and the standard on display was extremely high. The schools which took part were St. Joseph's, Mardyke, Cork; Scoil Iosaef Naofa, Cobh; Nagle Rice, Milltown; Scoil Chríost Rí, Turners Cross, Cork; St. Finbarrs, Bantry and host school and tournament organisers The Mon, Killarney.
Unfortunately, St. Brendan's Birr and Greenmount were unable to make it this year, but we look forward to welcoming them in the future.
With beautiful weather and exciting matches, the day culminated in a final pairing of Scoil Chríost Rí and St. Finbarrs. The Bantry boys proved too strong on this occasion and came out on top in the first time in this competition, much to the delight of their supporters and teacher, Killarney local Brian Gleeson.
At the presentation of prizes Mon Principal, Colm ó Súilleabháin, paid tribute to recently retired past pupil, Colm Cooper, saying the school always took great pride and satisfaction in his achievements and felt he was always an excellent role model both on and off the field for all young people. Colm Cooper himself remembered fondly all his schooldays playing football in the school yards and school field and felt it was there he developed his skills for the game. He also commented on the fact that two Cork schools contested the final and felt he should be getting nervous about the future of Kerry football!
Once again the tournament proved to be a great success and a unique way to bring the Presentation Family together. We would like to thank Micheal Sexton and all in PBST for their generous contribution towards the cost of the event and look forward to next year already!
