No words are adequate at a time like this. Nevertheless we need to use words to express our sorrow and our love. I pray that the God of all consolation will be close to you and that the love you share will sustain you during these difficult days.
I met Philip on several occasions both on visits to Ghana and during his time in Ireland. We had a number of long conversations. He always impressed me by his commitment, his sincerity, his intellect and his ability to relate to people. In a Province of young Brothers with many gifted and talented people, he would have stood out as a person who would fill future leadership roles. His dedication to the apostolate of education and Christian formation along with his pioneering work in Hain, are testament to his zeal for the message of Jesus and the charism of Blessed Edmund Rice.
Pope Francis says this: God surprises us too, he wrecks havoc with our plans, but he also says ‘Trust me, do not be afraid’.
Our challenge now is to trust in God who stands with us even in the middle of our pain. May we recall the many happy memories we have of Philip and be inspired by his faith and dedication.
Christian faith tells us that love is eternal, love endures and it triumphs even over death itself.
May Mary, Our Lady of the Presentation, the woman who stood by the Cross, be close to all of you at this time.
Be assured of the prayers of all the Brothers throughout the Congregation and of the Presentation Family.
Let us continue to pray for the soul of Brother Philip and for his grieving family, friends and confreres.
