The CLEO Annual Reunion, 2017, was held in the Presentation Youth Centre at Mardyke House on Wednesday, 21st June, 2017.
In contrast to what has been the custom up to now, this year the format of the formal session was that of a colloquium rather than that of a lecture. The topic was Faith Leadership in Catholic Schools and the focus was on how faith-leaders in primary and post-primary Catholic schools in the Republic of Ireland might best support each other precisely as faith leaders.
The invited speakers each made a brief presentation on the theme: Dr. F. J., Steele (CEO, CLEO) on the global perspective; Rev. Dr. T. J. Deenihan (Executive Secretary, Irish Episcopal Commission on Education and Formation and Chair of CLEO,CLG) on the perspective of the Hierarchy; Michael Sexton (CEO, PBST) on that of a trustee-body); Dr. M. A. Healy (former Principal, St. Vincent’s GNS, Cork) on that of a primary school head; John Culhane (former Principal, Scoil Chríost Rí, Cork), on that of a post-primary school head; Kathleen Murphy, on that of a primary school teacher; and Colm O’Brien, on that of a post-primary school teacher.
The various inputs and the consequent open discussion there-on emphasised the importance practitioners attach to a proper preparation for, and on-going support in, the exercise of faith leadership in Catholic schools today in the Republic of Ireland. The Last Word was spoken by Rev. Dr. J. M. Feheney, FPM, Founder and first Director of CLEO, who reminded the gathering that it was precisely to provide training for faith-based leadership in faith-based schools that CLEO had been established 25 years ago.
