Brother Paul McNiven, who died recently, was a Christian Brother who had lived with our Brothers in Grenada. Presentation Associate, Beverley Steele from Grenada, remembers her friend - the late Brother Paul...
"Br. Paul McNiven (1934-2014) was a member of the Congregation of Christian Brothers. After a full ministry in Canada, where he was born, he was stationed in Antigua, where he spent a good bit of his life teaching, and twice serving as Principal at St. Joseph's Academy on that island.
Brother Paul was a delightful person with a fully developed sense of humour. What particularly delighted me was that he had not forgotten how to giggle!
Due to the lack of Brothers, it was decided to close the house in Antigua. The Brothers who were still in Antigua were given the option of returning to a House in Canada, or living as part of the Presentation Brothers’ Community in Grenada. This is how Brother Paul came here for his retirement.
Although Brother Paul came to Grenada as a retired Brother, he continued his work with teachers at the Presentation Brothers College, Grenada, and was also active in the Prison Ministry. He greatly loved, and was loved, by those who had forfeited their freedom, and he certainly brought the love of God to them by example as well as by word.
It was sad news when we heard that Brother Paul had agreed to go to Dominica to live with a Christian Brother there. He left with Grenada in his heart, and he in ours.
In Dominica he made himself useful, giving seminars to teachers and assisting in the Cathedral Office.
Brother Paul often felt unwell, but no cause was identified until nine days before he died at the Princess Margaret Hospital in Roseau, Dominica on 21st February 2014. His death was therefore a shock to all who knew and loved him. Come and mourn with us awhile.
Of Brother Paul it was written "(He) was a dedicated Religious Brother and is undoubtedly already receiving the reward promised to those 'who instruct many into justice’”.
Nevertheless, please join with me in praying for him, and praying for vocations, so that the work of the Brothers in carrying out the mission set down by Blessed Edmund Rice may continue."
Brother Paul was laid to rest on Thursday 27th February 2014 in Roseau, Dominica.
