Brother Ivan Verba died peacefully in his sleep in the early hours of the morning of March 20, 2017 at the age of 73 at the Presentation Brothers' residence in Toronto. Brother Ivan will be deeply missed by the Willowdale Community, the Our Lady of the Americas Province, the Congregation and his family. He was preceded in death by his parents and leaves behind his brother, Michael Verba, Cleveland, Ohio, a sister, Mary Green, Madison, Wisconsin and a sister, Susanne Boose, Dayton, Ohio. He is also mourned by his 6 nieces and nephews and 7 great nieces and nephews.
He was born on September 4, 1943 in Cleveland, Ohio, United States. He attend St. Bernadette Elementary School and Westlake High School in Westlake, Ohio. He received his BA from Concordia University in 1975 and attended the Teacher Training College at McGill University in Montreal. In 1983 – 1984 he studied Theology at Gonzaga University in Spokane, Washington.
Brother Ivan joined the Presentation Brothers in Longueuil, Quebec, Canada in May of 1975. After completing his Novitiate, he served faithfully at St. Peter Elementary School Marshall, Missouri, Presentation High School Montebello, Quebec, Daniel O’Connell, Montreal, Sacred Heart School, Prince George, British Columbia, Holy Redeemer Parish, Kissimmee, Florida and Presentation College, St. Georges, Grenada, West Indies. His ministry assignments included: elementary and secondary education, school administration, Ministry to the Sick, Library and Special Education and most recently as Provincial Bursar and Business Manager.
He was a man of great faith with many gifts and talents. He has been described as a true gentleman of the Presentation, a man with a great sense of humor and a great ability to weave words together to make a beautiful tapestry. His expressions were always hilariously unique and so was his chuckle that preceded these expressions. He always was a gracious host, highly competent, dependable and unruffled in all he did. We are grateful for the gift Brother Ivan has been to his Brothers, his family and to all he encountered in ministry.
Visitation will take place on Saturday, March 25, 2017 at Blessed Trinity Parish, Toronto from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon. A Mass of Christian Burial will follow with Fr. Edward Murphy, pastor, as celebrant. Burial will follow at Holy Cross Cemetery, Thornhill. May he rest in peace.
