Conference 2007

In April 2007, over 140 people, mainly Transition Year students, from six Presentation Brothers Schools, gathered at The Commons Inn in Cork city for a special Conference to discuss their own project work.

Students from each school gave a presentation on social justice issues which they had studied in recent months.

Students from Coláiste an Spioraid Naoimh reported on a school readathon which raised funds for street children in Calcutta. Students from Colaiste Chriost Ri, Cork, decided to focus on sectarianism and its impacts. They were visited by a survivor of the Holocaust who spoke about his own experience of hate.

Meanwhile, Presentation Brothers College, Cork, were heavily involved in SHARE - a project which provides accommodation and friendship for the elderly.

In Cobh, students at Coláiste Muire followed a practical module called "Community Care" to engage with issues in their community, the developing world and environmental concerns.

Students from Presentation College Bray and Coláiste Chriost Rí made a special presentation about their experience of visiting the Brothers's mission in Ghana last year.

Finally, students from Miltown outlined plans of how they will support Brother John Guinane's new mission in Nigeria. Brother John left his teaching position in the town to open a new school in Bauchi State.

The guest speaker at the event was well-known campaigner for the homeless, Jesuit priest, Peter McVerry. He told the students of how the message of Jesus motivates and sustains him in his work. "Basically, if we see God as our father then that makes all of us brothers and sisters of one another.
